Restoring Antique Furniture?
3 Questions To Consider
What You Should Know Before You Restore Your Antique or Sentimental Furniture
Renew Your Treasures And Your Memories
Whether it's a new year or not, restoring treasured heirlooms is something many will consider and perhaps do at some point in their lives, just as you have.
As the inimitable Dolly Parton said in the classic film “Steel Magnolias,” “Time marches on and sooner or later, you realize it’s marching across your face.” Indeed time ravages, weakens, and decays most everything unless we choose to strengthen, renew, and restore what time has damaged.

When we take stock of the contents of our attics, basements and storage units, what other family treasures cry out to us to be re-evaluated, re-purposed, or restored? How do we know when to restore, how to preserve our precious pieces, or when, perhaps it's time to throw in the towel--or is it ever time to do that..? Oh the decisions! We can help.
3 Questions to Consider Before Restoring Your Antique Furniture
Can you live with it the way it is?
Can you buy a new one or find something similar?
Can you get rid of it and not look back with regret?
If you answered no to any of these, it might be time to restore.
The good news is, you don't have to live with it the way it is or deal with the regret of not keeping your family's treasured piece.
Our Restoration Consultants will help you restore your family treasures so they can be passed on to the next generation.
What Do They Mean To You?
Two factors drive our need to revisit our forgotten or unused antiques:
First, sentiment. What is the sentimental value of the art, furniture or other treasures we’ve neglected? What memories do they provoke? Is it something you feel strongly about passing on to the next generation? These are the most important questions to consider.
Second, value. There is intrinsic value and extrinsic value in the decision-making process to restore or not to restore antiques.
The intrinsic value is, of course, sentimental. But the extrinsic value, which refers to the actual market value of the piece, is often the wild card because we are not always aware of its value.
Word To The Wise:
Don't Make Restoration Decisions Solely Based On Monetary Value!
Be very cautious about making restoration decisions solely based on monetary value. What we know from 41 years of heirloom restoration is that you will rarely recoup the restoration investment--unless it's Mid-Century Modern furniture, these days.
So it's important to make sure you're going into it with realistic expectations and with a team of experts in period-correct furniture and antique restoration. What Is The Value Of My Piece?
One cannot watch “Antiques Roadshow” without the sudden clap of our jaw hitting the floor when we discover that what an owner thought was a piece of junk sitting in the attic for decades is actually worth an unexpected fortune!
You must also remember how many times those owners have been advised that their treasures would be worth more had they consulted professional antique restoration services and allowed the piece to be expertly restored.
We can conduct a fair market value assessment for you and let you know the value of your heirlooms and guide you to period-correct furniture and antique preservation options to retain the value and authenticity of your precious pieces.
Should I Restore?
The foremost reason we re-evaluate the condition and purpose of our antiques and sentimental pieces and ask ourselves, “Should I restore my sideboard, piano, sculpture or painting?” is because that treasure has journeyed with us and/or our ancestors to the present and holds a valued place in our personal history.
That piece is no longer made because the artisan or craftsperson who created it is no longer living. This, too, increases the market value of our collectibles.
We have a unique decision support process that helps our clients weigh all the important considerations: the sentimental value the piece holds for you, its actual value as-is versus restored, and cost comparisons for restoring versus buying new, if it is replaceable.
Our expert Restoration Consultants are happy to walk you through that process. It considers both the intrinsic and extrinsic value to help you make the right decision for you.
